Named Entity Recognition in Twitter using Images and Text

Named Entity Recognition (NER) is an important subtask of information extraction that seeks to locate and recognise named entities. Despite recent achievements, we still face limitations with correctly detecting and classifying entities, prominently in short and noisy text, such as Twitter. An important negative aspect in most of NER approaches is the high dependency on hand-crafted features and domain-specific knowledge, necessary to achieve state-of-the-art results. Thus, devising models to deal with such linguistically complex contexts is still challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-level architecture that does not rely on any specific linguistic resource or encoded rule. Unlike traditional approaches, we use features extracted from images and text to classify named entities. Experimental tests against state-of-the-art NER for Twitter on the Ritter dataset present competitive results (0.59 F-measure), indicating that this approach may lead towards better NER models.Comment: The 3rd International Workshop on Natural Language Processing for Informal Text (NLPIT 2017), 8 page

ANCHOR: logically-centralized security for Software-Defined Networks

While the centralization of SDN brought advantages such as a faster pace of innovation, it also disrupted some of the natural defenses of traditional architectures against different threats. The literature on SDN has mostly been concerned with the functional side, despite some specific works concerning non-functional properties like 'security' or 'dependability'. Though addressing the latter in an ad-hoc, piecemeal way, may work, it will most likely lead to efficiency and effectiveness problems. We claim that the enforcement of non-functional properties as a pillar of SDN robustness calls for a systemic approach. As a general concept, we propose ANCHOR, a subsystem architecture that promotes the logical centralization of non-functional properties. To show the effectiveness of the concept, we focus on 'security' in this paper: we identify the current security gaps in SDNs and we populate the architecture middleware with the appropriate security mechanisms, in a global and consistent manner. Essential security mechanisms provided by anchor include reliable entropy and resilient pseudo-random generators, and protocols for secure registration and association of SDN devices. We claim and justify in the paper that centralizing such mechanisms is key for their effectiveness, by allowing us to: define and enforce global policies for those properties; reduce the complexity of controllers and forwarding devices; ensure higher levels of robustness for critical services; foster interoperability of the non-functional property enforcement mechanisms; and promote the security and resilience of the architecture itself. Por uma educação especular: a didática e o currículo em jogo com o inesperado

Este ensaio especula acerca de um espaço intermediário de pesquisa e educação entre as instâncias das ciências humanas e das ciências da natureza, relacionado ao que Latour sugeriu como um Império do Meio. Tal espaço se projeta desde a compreensão, via uma leitura deleuziana, de que aprender significa uma recomposição corporal, apreensão do sensível num engendramento entre as faculdades humanas, que correlacionam matérias formadas com o informe, o conhecido com o que se ignora, o natural com o social. Trata-se do devir entre coisas e seres num mundo ontológico – com sua cosmologia – e pensamentos num processo semiológico – derivado em epistemologia. No decurso deste ensaio, opera-se com outras perspectivas, compondo este corpo textual especulativo com elementos do budismo e de um perspectivismo ameríndio, para forçar o pensamento a pensar sobre outros parâmetros – tensionando, assim, o pressuposto historicamente dominante, no ocidente, de uma cisão entre natureza e cultura, com as implicações daí decorrentes. Com efeito, este texto investe, por meio da especulação, num esforço para operar, ele próprio, como um espaço intermédio, em composições heterogêneas, projetando uma educação – dimensionada pelas noções de didática e currículo – que possa se atualizar sobre o potencial da incerteza, para que possibilite apreender outros modos de existir em seu próprio corpo – o corpus da Educação e os corpos de discentes e docentes

Pesquisa-improvisação : educação em jogo

Esta Dissertação, a partir de exercícios de escrita, e postulando certa noção de jogo e improvisação, flexionou-se sobre a correlação pesquisa e docência (então, pesquisa-docência), afirmando-se em uma Pesquisa-improvisação para uma educação em jogo. Para tanto, o próprio espaço da pesquisa, com destaque para o texto (portanto, pesquisa-texto), foi tomado enquanto campo de forças, dinamizado pela experimentação como condição de possibilidade para descentrar os corpos — e o próprio espaço —, e nisso produzir uma ambiência para os imprevistos: noutros termos, admitir o inesperado e que este possa potencializar a educação, amplificando assim seu caráter inventivo, intempestivo e improvável. Os procedimentos, que foram elaborados no entorno da noção de Poéticas da Notação, enfatizaram o labor do estudo a partir de notas, primeiro, por postular uma escrita imediata, segundo, pela contingência do e no pensamento, destacando a fragmentação inerente a este fazer; nesse sentido, a escrita, como ato, ganha destaque, porquanto a nota funciona como um índice do real, de visibilidade — do que foi notado e anotado —, entrando em jogo com a ficção e, através do caráter performativo deste fazer, com a autoficção. Trata-se, com efeito, de um labor interno da pesquisa, projetado sobre a imagem da docência, para o qual nos valemos de um Método Labiríntico (etimologicamente, labor intus), produzindo certa vertigem que parece ser necessária para que o corpo humano, demasiado humano, possa entrar em jogo com outras forças, e aí com seu potencial, em encontros imprevistos e composições heterogêneas — tudo para vitalizar a existência nos espaços de educação.This Dissertation, based on writing exercises, and postulating a certain idea of game and improvisation, has brought up the research-teaching correlation (then, research-teaching), affirming itself in a Research-improvisation for an education in game. Therefore, the research space itself, especially the text (therefore, text-research), was taken as a field of forces, energized by experimentation as a condition of possibility to decentralize the bodies - and the space itself - and thereby produce an ambience for the unforeseen: in other words, to admit the unexpected and that it may enhance education, thus amplifying its inventive, untimely and unlikely character. The procedures, elaborated around the idea of Poetics of Notation, emphasized the study work from notes, first by postulating an immediate writing, second, by the contingency of and in the thought, highlighting the fragmentation inherent in this activity; in this sense, writing, as an act, stands out, because the note acts as an index of the real, of visibility - of what was noted and written -, playing with fiction and, through its performative character, with self-fiction. It is, in fact, an internal work of research, projected on the image of teaching, for which we use a Labyrinthic Method (etymologically, labor intus), producing some vertigo that seems to be necessary so the human body, too human, can play with other forces, and then with its potential, in unforeseen encounters and heterogeneous compositions - all to vitalize the existence in the spaces of education
